If you’re planning a long-term volunteer trip such as with the Peace Corps or a mission organization you’ll need to do some things at home first. Be sure to cross everything off the list before you leave so you won’t have to worry about anything on your trip but making a difference.
Secure Your Home: If you own a home you may want to try to rent it out but if that’s not an option you’ll want to secure it as well as possible. Think about Home security and consider shutting off all your utilities but make sure someone checks in monthly on the electricity and plumbing.
Deal With Family: Talk to your family about the expectations for communication while you’ll be gone and set up a plan for everyone to visit, if at all possible. This will help the transition go more smoothly and you’ll feel most supported.
Financial Stability: Depending on whether or not your trip will be funded you’ll need to figure out how you’re going to make money when you get back. Either set up savings or a job for when you get back.

Extend a hand in service and be changed for a lifetime. Short-term overseas volunteering in the Peace Core offers an opportunity to engage in meaningful work while experiencing diverse people and culture. A term with Peace Core includes three months of training along with twenty-four months of service. Personal preference, education, skills and work experience are considered when being placed. The six step application process can take six to twelve months to complete. A Peace Core volunteer receives a living allowance similar to the local people, medical/dental care, transportation to and from country of service as well as transition funds at the end of the twenty seven months. Currently volunteers serve in seventy-six countries over eight regions. A volunteer might find themselves working on sustainable food security in Nicaragua. Youth and community development might await in Jordan. In Namibia a volunteer might work with others gathering hope for people with HIV/AIDS. The ability to teach English to university students might bring a volunteer to China. Volunteering will deepen and refine cross-cultural understanding and augment any career path. A Peace Core volunteer commits to improve the quality of life in the nation they travel to. Stories of the people will be heard and a volunteer will be prepared for a lifetime of service, forever changed through their experiences.

Making a decision to enlist in the Peace Corps will give you memories and experiences that will benefit you for the rest of your life. By making a commitment to serve in countries with those who are in dire need of assistance, you are contributing to service that reflects the greater good of humanity. You are the hand that reaches out to those less fortunate.

By signing with the Peace Corps, you will be placed in a region that has a need for people of your background and expertise. This however, does not mean that special qualifications are necessary. All that is required of you is enthusiasm and a motivation to make a difference. You may also choose your assignment preference, though it is not guaranteed that you will be placed to work in your desired location.

All Peace Corps assignments are 27 months in duration. You will be given vacation time as well as a small living allowance. During your time overseas, you will learn the language of the region as well as valuable skills that can prove to be of value to employers upon your return. If you have a strong desire to make life a little easier for those who don’t have the simple necessities of life, then the Peace Corps just might be for you.

The first step to becoming a Peace Corps volunteer is to submit an application. You will be asked for basic personal information, two essays, three references, a resume that includes employment history, educational background and volunteer history, college transcripts, evidence of a good credit history, and a health status report.

After your application information is reviewed you will be invited to an interview if the Peace Corp thinks that you are a good fit for their organization. During the interview you will talk with a recruiter, who is usually someone that has been a volunteer themself, to determine if the Peace Corp is the place for you, and how you would fit in if accepted.

If the recruiter decides that you would be a good fit for the Peace Corp you will be officially nominated for service. This is a recommendation to move a person on to the next step of the application process.

The fourth step in becoming a Peace Corp volunteer evaluates your health, eligibility according to Peace Corp guidelines, and how your skills would be an asset to the organization and the communities it serves.

If you make it through all of these steps you will be issued a formal invitation for service. You will receive information about the country you are being assigned to, as well as information about what you will be doing there. You will be sent an airline ticket, but before departure you will go through training to prepare you for your new life as a Peace Corp volunteer.
