Peace Core Volunteering Overseas For The Short-term
Posted by admin in on 10 11th, 2011Perhaps one of the most educational and life enriching experiences anyone can have is travel outside their culture and language. How much better to do this within a mission of improving the daily lives of others in that new culture. The Peace Corps has endured as a success story originating during the 1960′s Kennedy Administration and has become a landmark of international friendship, good will and people to people diplomacy.
The Peace Corps was founded to present service opportunities to Americans to compliment military service and offered incentives to serve. Service terms are similar to military and today a 27 month training and service commitment is required. However for returned volunteers and for specific contractors short term assignments are often available when no in-service volunteer is available. These opportunities are listed through the website and with agencies needing the required service.
Working on a specific project can be an enriching experience for all concerned. The beneficiaries of the project get a new school, agricultural training or whatever the project or assignment involved. The volunteer gets to expand their skills and knowledge and satisfaction from the successful result. Living and working in a foreign country and working side by side with local citizens is a practical way to accomplish realistic diplomacy and friendly relations with others who may not know much about us. The competition for hearts and minds is best won through personal effort and friendship. Political philosophies can compete but people have too much in common not to get along and be friends. The Peace Corps is not a way to get a free vacation; it is a way to serve the Nation through serving the people of other nations in personal service and projects.
Peace Corps volunteers can continue to serve through short term assignments and projects after their regular term. This is a good way to benefit others and still maintain a home-life after returning from their post.
